To The Moon, Alice!

posted Thursday, 22 September 2005
Now, I’m as adventurous as the next person, and while I wouldn’t call myself an avid sci-fi fan, I do indulge. I like Heinlein, Orson Scott-Card, Star Trek, and Star Gate. I’d love to think that we might accomplish inter-galactic space travel someday. Still, I don’t get Bush’s thing about sending men back to the moon.

Why? I’d like a rationale, please. This little trek will cost over 100 billion dollars. We’re fighting a war and struggling to recruit soldiers for it. We have a major national disaster to clean up after and it looks like we have another on its heels (prayers for those in Texas, right now). The national debt is spiraling out of control and our grandchildren will be paying it off. What’s with the moon? Hello, George, does the word “lunatic” mean anything to you? Oy.

Anyway, I really am thinking of those in Galveston and the surrounding areas right now. I have a friend who’s evacuating, but her hubby’s a first responder-firefighter-EMT and staying behind, so I’m saying lots of extra prayers for them. My mom lives on the Gulf coast—not in the path of anything right now, but I’m starting to get nervous. She just redid her kitchen though, so I don’t think she’s going anywhere. Certainly not the moon.
