We are still at war. Soldiers and Iraqis are dying. (DYING, people, do ya get that? Real human beings. Dead. Forever. People left behind to grieve. Children without parents. Forever.) We’re spending money we don’t have. People left homeless by Katrina have just discovered that their “year-long” vouchers for housing expire April 30. Real-live, innocent children traumatized by Katrina are about to land on the street again. Some of the luckier ones live in trailers that aren’t secured and won’t withstand hurricanes that may arise this summer and fall. Iran is a powder keg, and our president is playing with matches.
If someone wants to translate The Star Spangled Banner so that new immigrants know what it says, I’m fine with that. In fact, I’m going to go out on a limb here. Perhaps a nation that tortures people and detains them indefinitely without charge should be more concerned with actually BEING “the land of the free and the home of the brave” than with wasting a lot of time worrying about what language those words are sung in.
You got that right girl, What are you doing for May day?

I agree with on being tired of the trivialities being given so much
attention, while the tough issues are virtually ignored. In part, I think
the American public is overwhelmed by what is going on in the Bush
administration and we need some leadership to give us focus to fight the
scurrilous decisions our president is making. So instead we channel our
attention on things that can be more easily digested. Bah!
While Dubya is supremely lacking in most areas, isn't he a master of
diversion??? Throw a fireball at the translation of the anthem and then I
can do more of what I want while no one is looking!! It makes my stomach
hurt to think about him. And it makes me SICK to think of all of those
poor Americans who are STILL suffering from Katrina, while our government
seems to turn their backs. I have to wonder Paula, are we really the
minority? It baffles me how folks go to church, go to work, lives their
lives, love their children and just close their eyes to what is going on
around them. I'm not sure what more I can do. I donate what I can. I
write to my legislators and most importantly, I VOTE. I try to teach my
children to understand how lucky they are and that there are so many with
less. But sometimes, it just doesn't feel like it's enough.
Amen, sister! Our government's priorities are crap.
