Have y’all heard about this Kaavya Viswanathan? At the tender age of 17, she got a $500 grand advance for a two-book contract, and now she’s being accused of plagiarism. I’m starting to wonder if this is the latest way to publicize a book—accuse a bestseller or rising star of plagiarism so that everyone will buy your book so that they can compare. It sounds like some passages are really close. I know 17-year-old writers. It’s so hard to get them to understand what plagiarism is. They just can’t seem to shake the notion that changing a few words does not mean the idea is yours. If she did plagiarize, I doubt it was with evil intent.
At any rate, I’ve decided it’s time to really start writing to the market. I’m going to write my memoir. You see, I’m a geisha who spent hard time in jail where I found my cellmate murdered and laid out like a DaVinci drawing...
You can see why it’s best if I take a little break from the grading.
ROTFLMAO! That was great. I can't wait to read those memoirs. Still LOL.
I've read some of the "plagarized" passages, compared with the originals,
and it is, IMHO, pretty darn blatant. I can't imagine what she was
thinking. She says she has a "photographic memory" (hey, she's at Harvard,
so she might be telling the truth). I think you nailed it that it's the
latest way to publicize. She'll settle with the original author and sell
the movie rights. She could get kicked out of school, though.
No matter how "bad" you are, you can always get on David Letterman! ;^)
$500 grand to an unknown 17 year old. What is wrong with that picture? It
sure sounds bogus to me.
