Eureka!

posted Sunday, 6 March 2005
All right, you know a few entries ago when I said that I don’t really like it when people try to tell me what to write? I lied. Well, not exactly. I still don’t like it when people get really pushy, but a great idea hit while I was having lunch with a few good friends. One of them told us a story about her wedding (sorry—I’m not getting any more specific than that). Anyway, she got to the end and said, “I’ve always wondered about…"(top secret). We all looked at each other and said, “Now, that’s a book!” And man were we right (IMHO)! I’m so psyched about it. The thing is no one tried to tell me what to do from there. They said, “You’re the writer…go for it.” I did, of course, promise to dedicate it to them. So here I am, eating my words.

I’m back to the conundrum writers often face, I’m hot to write, but it was Friday afternoon of a packed-full weekend. This means, of course, that whatever messes were made in the house will not get cleaned this week. I want to get started and rough things out so that I can give my agent a solid idea of the direction in which I’m going.

This also entails a genre shift—not sure what I’d call it. Romance? Women’s fiction with strong romantic elements? At any rate, it will allow me to blend historical and contemporary and ages of women, and I’m actually excited about it. Happy dance!!!

The lesson here is how important it is for writers to not isolate themselves completely, which is so easy to do. It’s crazy, but in addition to being able to write more, working part time has allowed me to have lunch with friends far more often, and I have to tell you, I love it!

All of this means that this will have to be another short entry. I have grading to do, and if I want to be able to write all day every day next week (which I do!) I’d better get the papers done today.
